Stand Out
Megan is a young marketing professional who works at an organization with a “start-up feel” doing “everything from UX/UI design to social media campaigns, email marketing” and much more. She says, no two days at her job are ever the same.
About
“Right now I fill my free time blogging, creating my own brand content, and I love working out and getting outdoors — we’re lucky to live here in Colorado. I did my undergrad at University of Colorado Denver, and received a B.S in Business Administration & Marketing back in 2019 before the pandemic hit! I have always considered going back to school and doing a Masters in marketing to be able to teach at the university and/or progress in my career.”
What do you think have been the biggest barriers you have faced so far in achieving your goals?
“When talking about barriers to success, I sometimes stand in my own way. It is cliché to say, but ask and you shall receive when it comes to opportunities. At some point, I realized how many times I stood in my own way, afraid to ask for what I need, or am looking for, or a chance to do something else or learn something new, and looking back it’s so frustrating to see! I also blame it on the transition of being a contractor/freelancer where everything fell on my shoulders to only recently in the last few years, I moved into a full time salary role, where an organization can cover so much of what as a freelancer you’d have to cover/take care of.”
What would you tell a younger version of you?
“Hindsight is 20/20, but if I have any advice to offer for someone looking to get into marketing, or those getting their first job, I would just say go for opportunities sooner whether you think you are qualified or not, you’ll be surprised who will take a chance on you and what comes your way when you ask!”
What advice would you give to another woman who is trying to break into the same industry you are in?
“To any woman wanting to get into the tech/design/marketing space, I would say don’t be afraid to be bold or to stand out. When I applied for my most recent position I submitted a pink resume with a cute headshot and a very visually appealing resume. I think that helped me stand out in the application pool, even though I had less tangible skills, they said my attitude and presentation had them sold when they spoke with me.”
Final tips/advice:
“Big piece of personal advice would be to never stop learning or taking on more. Whether it’s in your free time, or your company giving you the opportunity to learn — take every chance you get to widen your skill set! In the long run, it pays off!”
I love Megan’s advice on continuing to learn throughout your career as well as her advice on having a visually appealing resume- totally agree! You want to stand out!
